How To Keep Rabbits Entertained

How To Keep Rabbits Entertained

Hello friends, hope you all are doing great with your beloved bunny. Today, I am going to talk about some ways you can prevent boredom and entertain your lovely pet rabbit. If you are new to here, welcome! I give tips and tricks on how to make sure you have a happy and healthy bunny in your home.

Variety of Toys

So, let’s jump right in. The first tip I have for you is to get a variety of toys. A lot of rabbits will have their own idea of what kinds of toys are fun, and it’s not necessarily going to be what you find at a pet store. It might be, but it might not be. So, you want to give your rabbit as many different choices as possible. Give them some cardboard toys, some hay-based toys, and natural toys like sticks. You can also give them some wooden toys. Just give them a whole lot so they can decide what they want to play with, whenever they want to play with it. They can pick their favorites, have a lot of fun, and keep themselves happy and entertained.

Foraging Behavior

Next up is to give your rabbit some foraging opportunities. Rabbits have a natural instinct to forage for food and yummy things to eat. You can use this natural instinct and their curiosity to get them active and get their minds working, so they can forage for some food. One way to do this is to use a dried herb blend. They sell these at Small Pet Select, which is my favorite online store.

What I do is take a little handful of these herbs and sprinkle them into the rabbit’s hay. As they eat their healthy hay, they can also forage and look for the yummy herbs, which they really enjoy. These could be pieces of dried greens or dried flowers, which are healthy and delicious for rabbits to eat. Foraging activities can also include something like a treat ball. You can put their pellets or a treat inside, and your rabbit has to roll the ball around to get the food out. Anything that hides treats is a great foraging activity for rabbits. This is also an excellent way to encourage exercise, as it gets them moving instead of just sitting in one place while they eat. You can also read “can rabbit eat cucumber“.

Digging Box

Rabbits also really like to dig, which is a natural instinct. In the wild, they dig networks of tunnels underground for homes. This is especially common in female rabbits, who are more likely to dig the tunnels. It’s often very fun for rabbits to use this natural digging instinct. Of course, we want to avoid destructive digging, like on carpets, so instead, give them a piece of cardboard to dig into. They tend to enjoy that. You can also make a digging box that they can hop into and dig. I find that giving rabbits a big box or bin of hay encourages this digging and foraging behavior in a constructive way, not a destructive way.

Train Your Rabbit

Training your rabbit is another great way to keep them entertained. Rabbits are very intelligent and can be trained much like a dog. They can learn to come when called, give high fives, or even give kisses. You can teach them any number of tricks, and they have fun doing it. It helps them use their brains and gives them a sense of agency, often boosting their confidence. Training can also strengthen the bond between you and your rabbit because they learn to trust you—trust that once they do the trick, they’ll get the treat. Spend Quality Time With Your Rabbit

You also want to make sure you spend a lot of time socializing with your rabbit. Block out time in your schedule each day to spend time with them. Rabbits are very social creatures and enjoy interacting with people. Regular social interaction helps their mental health, prevents boredom and depression, and improves their overall quality of life. You can sit on the floor with them so they can come up and interact with you, or just hang out in the same room. They may not always want to interact, as rabbits often enjoy doing their own thing, but giving them the option to socialize with you can really improve their mental health.

Space and Exercise

Along the same lines, make sure you give your rabbit plenty of space and exercise. This applies to both their enclosure space and their time outside of it. If you keep your rabbit in an enclosure, make sure it’s large enough for them. Rabbits that don’t have enough space tend to get bored, cranky, and frustrated. Their enclosure should be at least three times their length and about twice their width, and they should be able to stand up on their hind legs without issue. I always recommend using a pet exercise pen rather than a cage marketed for rabbits. Typically, you’ll find these pens in the dog section of a pet store, or you can find them online.

Also, ensure that your rabbit gets plenty of time outside their enclosure to exercise. Before I free-roamed my rabbits, my rule was that whenever I was home, my rabbits could also be out. This ensured they got enough exercise, had fun zooming around the room, and could interact with me. Overall, it leads to much happier, healthier bunnies. Consider Getting a Rabbit Partner

Lastly, if possible, consider getting a friend for your rabbit. Another rabbit can keep them entertained all day, reducing boredom and destructive behavior. However, you can’t just put a second rabbit with your first one; you need to go through a bonding process. I have an article on “How to bond with your rabbit” if you’re interested just click the link. In the meantime, if you have a single rabbit, use the other tips to keep them entertained, what I discuss above. Again briefly:

  • give them their favourite toys,
  • give them digging box,
  • allow them to use their natural instincts,
  • and make sure they have plenty of social interaction with you.
