Hello friends! Hope you all are doing great with your beloved bunnies. Today, I’ll be sharing something frequently searched on the internet by bunny parents: how to get rid of rabbit pee smell. Here are ten tips that can help you a lot!
1. Get Your Bunny Fixed
Tip number one would 100% be to get your bunny fixed because when you get your bunny fixed, they will become less aggressive, and also sometimes bunnies smell because of their hormones. You know, it’s very good to get them fixed, and of course, it’s also good for their health. They are also less prone to pee and poo accidents, and they become more litter trained. And also they are not that aggressive or territorial anymore, so they don’t pee everywhere.
2. Reduce Pellet Intake
Tip number two would be to give your bunny fewer pellets. Usually, on the pellet package, they will write a higher amount of pellets than what you actually should give to your bunny, but if you have a good brand of pellets, it actually says on the packet that rabbit should only have 1/2 dcl of pellets, which is 100% correct. So, usually, on pellets, they will say one cup for dwarf rabbits, and that is way too much. When your bunny becomes overweight, a lot of times they will smell more, and also their pee and poo will smell a lot more as well if they are overweight.
3. Check the Hay Quality
Tip number three is to check the hay you are using. Sometimes, if your bunny room or bunny area is smelling bad, it’s not because of the bunny, but it’s because of the hay. So you have to go close to your hay and smell it, and if it smells bad, then you might want to change the brand or the type of hay you’re using. The type of hay we are using for the most part is Timothy and Orchard hay. Those hays have a really subtle smell to them, so our room doesn’t smell like hay in your nose all day long. When you pick the hay from the store, the farm, or wherever you are going, make sure to check that the hay isn’t wet, because sometimes you buy hay, and maybe it was out in the rain or something, and it got moist. Sometimes that is the reason why hay smells. Moist air gets trapped inside, and it could cause mold and stuff like that, so that’s definitely not good. Make sure your hay is dry inside. You can also read “hay for rabbits to eat“.
4. Clean Litter Boxes Daily or Every Other Day
Tip number four would be to clean your bunny’s litter boxes daily or at least every other day. This is a really, really important thing because the number one reason why rabbit’s area sometimes smells is not because of rabbit really but because of what he releases. If you really do not have the time, then at least do it every other day; do not do it only once a week. That will make your bunny’s room smell like pee and poo, like a toilet, so don’t do that. Also, I know a lot of people like to buy CareFresh for bunnies, but I would not recommend you guys to buy CareFresh. Even though it has a scent to it—like lemon, strawberry, and stuff—that might be good for your room, it’s not healthy for the rabbits. When they eat that, it’s not good for their digestion, and it will just get stuck inside of their stomach. Just line the litter box with hay because that is the most natural thing you can put in their litter box.
5. Ventilate the Room
Tip number five might be an obvious one, but definitely open your windows a few times during the day because that will help the air to become more refreshed, so the bad scents inside of the house will go out, and the good smell will come in. Also, when you open up your windows, you will lessen the dust in your bunny’s area and, of course, in your area.
6. Check for Hidden Accidents
Tip number six would be to always make sure to check for any pee or poo accidents. If there is a hidden pee or poo accident somewhere in your bunny’s area, then of course that will start to smell. Just go around and look under your bed if the bunny can access that, look under the fleece, and in all of the corners because bunnies love to pee in the corners and poo.
7. Deep Clean the Room Weekly
Tip number seven would be to do a weekly OCD-style cleaning of your bunny’s room. That means changing all of the fleece and sweeping the floor really clean and mopping it.
8. Clean the Bunny’s Area Daily
Tip number eight would be to clean your bunny’s room daily, and I don’t mean cleaning OCD-style daily. Just clean their litter boxes, get rid of most of the hay on the fleece, and put the fleece and towels back in place inside of the cage or on the floor or wherever you have it. This, I feel like, helps a lot with the dusty kind of smell that you might get from your bunny’s area, so this will get rid of that.
9. Feed Fresh Herbs Daily
Tip number nine would be to feed your bunny herbs daily. I know most of you guys probably already do this, but I want to tell you about some herbs that make your bunny smell even better. Lemon balm and basil have a really nice refreshing scent, and when your bunny eats them, their mouth will get really good smelling—it’s almost like they’re brushing their teeth. After your bunny eats herbs, make sure to smell their mouth; it smells really good. Coriander is another herb that will make your bunny’s mouth smell really good. 10. Give Fruits Sparingly for Sweet Scents
Tip number ten and last tip I have for you guys is to give your bunny some fruit about once or twice a week. Fruit definitely makes your bunny smell good if you’re not giving too much. It makes them smell great, especially if you’re giving them;
- pineapple,
- apple,
- pears,
- bananas,
- or other fruits with a sweet scent.
When Rabbit eats, for example, bananas, he smells so good, like a baby. Also, of course, it’s not so good for their health if you give too much. About 2 teaspoons a week is a safe amount to give your rabbit, and it will make them smell lovely.
Conclusion
So, that’s it for the article! I really hope my tips help you guys out. If your bunny’s room is smelling bad right now, I’m sorry about that. If you apply these tips, I hope they help—I’m almost fully sure they will.
